Nect makes online identification easy and secure and wins Hamburg Innovation Award
Nect is the winner in the START category at the Hamburg Innovation Awards. The company, thus named the "most exciting startup on the market," received the most votes in a jury vote, ahead of Ant Robotics, a robotics platform for field logistics, and Beyond Emotion, which enables emotion recognition in care recipients using artificial intelligence (AI). Benny Bennet Jürgens and Carlo Ulbrich founded Nect GmbH in 2017, fulfilling the START category condition that a candidate must be no older than five years.
The successful startup has developed the "Nect Ident" process. Users download an app, create a short selfie video and then film their ID card or passport. In the background, software based on AI checks whether it is a real person and not just a photo. The app guides the user step by step through the registration process and compares the identity with the ID card. The process meets all legal requirements, for example from the German Federal Data Protection Act, the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the Insurance Supervision Act.
Nect Ident was first used at R+V Versicherung in 2018. In the meantime, the customer base includes other well-known companies such as ADAC, BARMER and Telekom Deutschland. In addition to Nect Ident, the company offers "Nect Sign," a solution for qualified electronic signatures (QES), as well as the "Nect Wallet," which functions as a digital ID card and enables reuse of the digital identity in just a few seconds.
The Nect team now consists of around 140 people, with 10 to 20 joining each month. The app has already been used by over 5 million users, often more than once. The startup, which is financed by Carsten Maschmeyer's VC fund ALSTIN Capital, among others, is profitable and is now pushing ahead with internationalization, including to Austria, Poland and Spain.
