Lignin is a natural alternative to microplastics

Lignopure was founded in 2019 by the three engineers Daniela Arango, Joana Gil Chavez and Wienke Reynolds at Hamburg University of Technology. As early as in 2022, Lignopure put the first production plant in Buxtehude into operation, which can recycle 90,000 kilograms of lignin per year. As a result of an initial financing round of 2.2 million euros, LignoBase, the first multifunctional lignin-based ingredient for the cosmetics sector, was developed to market maturity in 2023.

We are very pleased about the trust of our investors. This financing will enable us to strengthen the company's global presence, lay the foundation for global production together with international biorefineries and further expand our product portfolio. This financing brings us a significant step closer to our mission of decarbonising the chemical industry and making lignin a real alternative to harmful ingredients.

Lignin is a naturally occurring chemical found in plants that can serve as a basis for alternatives to fossil chemicals such as microplastics. The processed lignin is not only used in the cosmetics sector but is also suitable for various industrial applications in the field of food supplements or the production of vegan leather substitutes.
