Success Stories Startups Ecosystem Hamburg

In times of rising food prices, an institution like the Hamburger Tafel is more important than ever. Yet it relies not only on donations, but also on volunteer work. The food startup foodloose has set a good example in this regard, with its team members taking part in a social day at the Hamburger Tafel. Now they want to encourage other companies to provide this assistance as well.

The Hamburger Tafel is an association that supports needy people by providing them with donated food. The employees invest over 16,000 working hours each year, most of them on a voluntary basis. Due to high inflation in food prices, the need is greater than ever and not only the demand for donations is increasing, but also for helping hands. To satisfy this, there is an easy-to-implement idea: introducing a social day at companies to support the Hamburger Tafel.

foodloose is leading the way, others are welcome to follow suit

That's exactly what foodloose has put into practice. This year, the company known for its organic snacks decided to support the Hamburger Tafel with personal commitment in addition to food and monetary donations. For eight and a half weeks, foodloose employees accompanied the Tafel's tours twice a week to collect, sort and distribute food. Now they want to encourage other companies, from startups to large corporations, to do the same.

“Everyone should go with the Tafel to get an appreciation for the food in the first place. I thought it was terrific to realize how much food is thrown away, but also to see how much value it still has and how many people benefit from it. I think that every company should allow its employees to get involved socially as well. It's not a lot of effort that the company provides, but it also increases motivation and can really make a big difference.”

"We will also need many more people just for the next year. Most of our volunteers are retirees, which means the point where the say they can no longer work, for example, for physical reasons, can always be reached quickly." Accordingly, any help is welcome.
