The Hamburg research center DESY is a world leader in the field of particle physics and has already spawned some startups. With the DESYUM, a visitor center is being created that will serve as a multimedia exhibition space to convey cutting-edge research at DESY to citizens, school classes and all interested parties. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated there on January 22, 2024.
The DESYUM as a place of encounter and sustainability
Since the foundation stone was laid in May 2023, the visitor center near the DESY main entrance in Hamburg's Notkestraße has grown by six floors. With 3,250 square meters of floor space, DESYUM will house conference rooms, an auditorium, a cafeteria, a green roof with a roof terrace and offices, as well as an exhibition about the research center on two floors. The opening is planned for summer 2025. Hamburg's Senator for Science, Katharina Fegebank, and around 150 other guests gathered at the DESY campus in Hamburg for the topping-out ceremony to honor the work of the construction team.
Special emphasis is placed on sustainability during the construction of DESYUM. This is achieved through various measures, including the use of special construction techniques that save 30 percent of the concrete used in the load-bearing parts of the building. The façade of the building is made from recycled and recyclable aluminum. After completion, the building will be heated with waste heat from the DESY particle accelerators and will have a biodiverse green roof with rainwater storage.
Major project Science City
The DESYUM also plays a central role in Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, the development project in the district surrounding the DESY campus. Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld combines the concept of a joint urban development of science, research and teaching with business, working, living, leisure and recreation. The first Science City Day will take place on June 1, 2024, when DESY will also open its doors to visitors.
