With the Innovation in Digital Equality Award (IDEA), the Hamburg Senate is honoring forward-looking project ideas and outstanding commitment to equality for women in the digital space for the third time. Equality Senator Katharina Fegebank presented the award, which is endowed with a total of 25,000 euros, to the startups Saferspaces and UrbView at a Senate reception. In addition, Frederike Probert, founder of Mission Female, received the honorary award for her great services to equality for women in the digital space.

Saferspaces and UrbView ensure greater security

Leah Rott, Gerret Halberstadt and Patrick Chalet from Saferspaces received the award for the development of the app of the same name, which aims to provide help in cases of sexual assault and discrimination, especially in Hamburg's nightlife. Saferspaces facilitates the often very challenging step of actively approaching a person and asking for help in a low-threshold and targeted way. UrbView by Elnaz Nouri, Franziska Vogg, Gerard Jover Pujol and Adrià Molina Rodriguez takes the approach of using artificial intelligence in urban planning to ensure that the safety needs of all citizens are taken into account. "UrbView" intends to provide urban planners and architects with the necessary data on threat potentials via artificial intelligence trained with photos, among other things, in order to derive the appropriate measures for the safe design of cities.

"Women's rights, equality and access to digital technologies are closely intertwined. Many of the areas of our lives have been transformed by digital technologies, and this change has a direct impact on gender equality policy issues - because structural disadvantage exists in digital spaces as well. That's why we are using the IDEA Award to promote technical innovations or innovative concepts that address the issue of greater equality. I am very pleased that we are awarding the prize to two outstanding projects this year. Both projects share the aspiration to use technological innovation to enable all people to live together in public spaces on an equal footing and safely - regardless of gender, sexual orientation or other characteristics. I am also particularly pleased that Frederike Probert is receiving the honorary award for her many years of great commitment to equality and networking among women."

About the Innovation in Digital Equality Award

The Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg presents the IDEA - Innovation in Digital Equality Award every two years. The background: women are still not sufficiently involved in shaping digital change. Due in part to factors such as unconscious bias, they receive significantly less startup capital in the tech sector than men. Women and girls are severely underrepresented in training and study programs that are particularly important for digital transformation. The aim of the award is to promote equality for women in the digital world and to make positive examples visible. Startups, individuals, associations and companies could apply for the award. An independent jury of experts selected the winners from 16 submissions for the sponsorship award and five proposals for the honorary award.
