In a series C financing round, Triodos Food Transition Europe Fund has invested in the Hamburg-based startup STADTSALAT. STADTSALAT is a chain for sustainable and healthy food with stores in Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne and soon also in Düsseldorf. The company intends to use the freshly raised capital for further expansion in the German market as part of its growth strategy.

STADTSALAT was founded in 2014 by Marcus Berg and Tom Smets and serial founder Moritz Mann. In the beginning, the idea was to offer freshly prepared salads and bowls via their own delivery service. Added to this was the aspect of sustainability: for example, the startup sources organic products, uses recyclable packaging, achieves very low food waste rates, and regularly changes its menu to include the best available seasonal products from the region.

"STADTSALAT’s passion for healthy and sustainable food together with best-in-class tech and operations makes them a great addition to our portfolio. These fundamentals underpin what we believe is a unique business, able to serve customers with quick, convenient food which can also improve their health outcomes. We share a deep impact commitment with the founders who want to transform the convenience food sector in Germany to be healthier and more sustainable."

In addition, STADTSALAT has developed its own software to automate much of its customer and operational processes. From customer orders, stock orders, demand forecasting to managing delivery cycles, the company uses its own technology. As a result, STADTSALAT reduces food waste, buys just-in-time fresh ingredients delivered daily to ensure quality, and operates its own production and delivery system.
