3 Hamburg venture capital companies with an industry focus
For startups, the search for investors is part of everyday business. Contacts with venture capital firms, also known as VCs, which are active all over the world, are particularly sought-after. There are several of these companies in Hamburg. With MobilityFund, Tec Pier and Oyster Bay, we present three that each specialise in one industry.
MobilityFund
MobilityFund is a venture capital fund registered with BaFin that is dedicated to promoting the mobility transition. The company focuses on software solutions and B2B models and invests in both passenger and freight transportation by road, rail, air and sea. MobilityFund generally invests as part of seed rounds and is aimed at startups that have launched their products or services on the market, are generating initial sales and are looking for capital to scale up. In addition to the risk-diversified main funds, there are also special purpose vehicles for individual investments in startups that enable closer cooperation. The portfolio includes the container management platform Flowfox from Hamburg.
TecPier
TecPier, which focuses on the maritime space, logistics and global supply chains, has invested in several Hamburg-based companies, including Closelink, Nautiluslog and again Flowfox. This VC is primarily aimed at early-stage startups as well and, in addition to capital, also provides global industry access, support in raising further funds and know-how for company development. Since May 2024, TecPier's Managing Director Tim Reinsch additionally helds a leading position at the British investor Tufton, which has a similar focus to TecPier.
Oyster Bay
For food startups, it is often a particularly big challenge to find a venture capitalist; the money tends to flow into quickly scalable tech solutions. Oyster Bay is one of the first VCs dedicated to the European food industry. It prefers to invest in seed and series A rounds. One motive is to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases, like those caused by factory farming. Oyster Bay's portfolio includes well-known companies such as Oatly, Air Up and GoodBytz from Hamburg. This startup, which develops kitchen robots, received a total of 12 million euros in 2023, with Oyster Bay acting as the main investor.
