These 3 startups make caring for relatives easier
More and more people in Germany are care-dependent, while the cost of residential care is reaching record levels. This is not the only reason why staying in one's own home is often the better alternative, although it does come with a few challenges. The Hamburg startups fabel, besser zuhause and Beyond Emotion are helping to overcome them.

fabel
The startup fabel offers a digital platform that supports family caregivers. This is done via an app that can be used to put together a personal care team, coordinate tasks, plan appointments, document care activities in a comprehensive diary and access a variety of everyday helpers and service providers from the care sector. There are also helpful tips and information on all aspects of care. In January 2025, fabel announced its first round of financing amounting to 1.3 million euros.

besser zuhause
In order to enable people in need of care to continue living in their own home, complex building conversions are often necessary. The good news is that it is possible to apply for funding for many of these measures. The startup besser zuhause – meaning better at home - provides support in planning and coordinating the implementation of measures such as the installation of a floor-level shower or a raised toilet. In addition, besser zuhause takes care of the application and billing with the care insurance fund. The startup was created partly as a result of one of the founders' experiences with his grandfather, who was in need of care.

Beyond Emotion
BEJOY is the name of the product with which the startup Beyond Emotion aims to facilitate communication between senior citizens and their relatives. It is a tablet that makes it easy to share photos, videos and messages. The special feature that sets BEJOY apart from other tablets is its artificial intelligence, which analyses facial expressions and deduces a person's state of mind. If this deteriorates, relatives are informed immediately. The technology is the result of years of research.
