2021 was the record year for startup investments in Germany. 2022 could not keep up, but the results from the just published EY Startup Barometer show: the numbers are better than the mood and Hamburg even recorded a plus compared to the previous year.

Despite regression: 2022 second-best year since the start of the survey

Since 2015, the business consulting firm EY has been summarizing the financing rounds of startups in Germany in its Startup Barometer. According to this, 17.36 billion euros flowed in 2021, a figure that had not nearly been approached until then. In view of the current difficult economic situation, a decline was to be expected. At 43%, this is also quite significant, but less dramatic when viewed in the broader context. At 9.853 billion euros, the result is still significantly higher than the third-best year 2019 (6.228 billion euros).

Hamburg in the plus thanks to 1KOMMA5°

In Hamburg, the development is even positive against the trend. Although the number of financing rounds is slightly down at 71 compared with 82, the total finance amount in 2022 is actually at 547 million a good 19% higher than in 2021 (459 million euros). The startup 1KOMMA5°, which specializes in climate protection technology and was able to raise 200 million euros in April, has a decisive share in this. This puts it in the top 10 nationwide. Overall, the number of large rounds over 50 million euros has fallen, while there was even a slight increase in the 5 to 50 million range.

Berlin remains the undisputed startup metropolis. At around 4.9 billion euros, just under half of the venture capital went to the capital. In the ranking of the German states, Hamburg occupies a good fourth place behind the large territorial states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. The strongest sector analyzed in more detail by EY is "Software & Analytics," which raised a total of 3.244 billion euros and 200 million euros in Hamburg, in a total of 27 rounds. Also worth mentioning are "E-Commerce" with 25 million euros (15 rounds) and "Mobility" with 14 million euros (3 rounds).

Even if in the 2nd half of 2022 there was once again a greater reluctance to invest than in the 1st half, the results are still much better than the general mood would suggest. And since the latest data on the German economy also looks better than expected, we can hope for a good startup year in 2023.
