The German Electron Synchrotron DESY and the Discovery Partners Institute (DPI), the innovation agency of the public universities of the State of Illinois in Chicago are collaborating with immediate effect. The focus of the international cooperation is the joint support of knowledge and technology transfer as well as the promotion of scientific spin-offs. Startups will benefit from the cooperation

The collaboration between DESY and DPI will be suspended in the long term via two lighthouse projects in the respective innovation area:

  1. The DESY Innovation Factory, an integrated technology and startup center, will open on the Hamburg DESY campus in 2026.

  2. DPI also plans to open its new innovation center on the Chicago River in 2026. This will expand Chicago's technology innovation ecosystem.

The two research centers also plan to jointly commercialize new technologies by referring new partners from Germany to DPI and vice versa. In this way, startups will find access to the American market via DPI and to the European market via DESY. Together, DPI and DESY want to promote each other's strengths through marketing and events. There will also be exchange programs.

"This new collaboration pays excellent dividends to the existing activities and ties between the two sister cities of Hamburg and Chicago. It is a prime example of how we want to further expand international cooperation and exchange in Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld and strengthen innovative power. This is how scientific findings give rise to patents and social progress. Hamburg researchers and startups take their innovations to the world. Cooperations of this kind contribute to Hamburg's international appeal as an attractive location for science and innovation."
