"Green economy" is a collective term for economic activity in which particular attention is paid to ecological sustainability. One sub-category is the "blue economy", which focuses on the sustainable use of the oceans. We present three Hamburg startups in this area in this article.
OceanScore
OceanScore has offices in Hamburg and Funchal on Madeira and was founded in 2020. The startup's range of platforms and services aims to help shipping companies with emissions regulation. The centrepiece is the ETS Manager, a solution for handling EU emissions trading. In addition, OceanScore has information from over 130,000 ships with around 250 data points, enabling comprehensive planning in accordance with existing and upcoming EU regulations.
Searoutes
Searoutes also provides access to a large pool of data that primarily relates to the carbon footprint of transport by ship. The startup was founded in 2019 and also has an international presence with offices in Hamburg and Marseille. A number of interfaces ensure the flow of data; Searoutes describes itself as "API-first". A special service is a kind of route planner that determines the CO2 impact of various shipping routes and makes corresponding savings recommendations.
Clean Ocean Coatings
Shipping companies and ship owners can also save CO2 with Clean Ocean Coatings. This startup, founded in 2020, has developed a hull coating that reduces the growth of algae and barnacles. This is much more than an aesthetic problem, as the growth causes significantly higher fuel consumption. Compared to other coatings, Clean Ocean Coatings' product is free of toxins and also lasts longer.
