A recently published special analysis of the German Startup Monitor focusses on the topic of GreenTech. According to the report, around 3,000 startups from this sector are active in Germany. Over the past five years, they have raised 11.7 billion euros in financing rounds. Hamburg is one of the strongholds with 177 companies of this type.

The GreenTech Monitor 2025 was published in March by the German Startups Association and is based on analyses of data from the German Startup Monitor as well as data from the startupdetector and Dealroom platforms. These are the most important results of the study:

  • 48% of the startups in the German Startup Monitor 2024 categorise themselves as part of the green economy.

  • At the time of the evaluation, there were a total of 2,927 active green techs in Germany. The number of startups recently fell from 545 (2021) to 303 (2024).

  • At 26%, the energy sector accounts for more than a quarter of the GreenTech sector. 36% develop their own hardware, compared to only 23% of startups overall.

  • 33% of GreenTechs hold their own patents (18% of startups in general) and these companies also receive more support from universities when they are founded (67% compared to 55%).

  • 71% of GreenTechs cooperate with established companies - significantly more than startups in general (62%).

  • A quarter of all startup investments have gone to green tech startups in the last five years.

Overall, the results make it clear that GreenTech startups are of growing importance for the German economy and are playing a pioneering role, especially in technological innovations.
