There are areas in medicine where images can make a decisive contribution to a diagnosis. Dermatology, the study of human skin and its diseases, is one of them. The Hamburg-based startup doctorderma takes advantage of this and, with its online service, saves the patients long waiting times for an appointment and in the doctor's office.

A fast and well-positioned team

The idea for doctorderma was born in May 2022, the actual work began only in the summer and at the end of October the startup already went online with its offer. The rapid implementation was ensured by a founding quartet whose competencies complement each other ideally. Lisanne Hake and Dr. Christian Drerup bring the medical expertise, Marc Hoffmann studied business administration and has already founded several companies, and Florian Beck-Klaus is the software expert. They head a 14-member team that includes social media, online marketing and IT experts in addition to five doctors.

To get a medical assessment of a possible skin condition, all you need to do is register via the doctorderma website. There, one has to upload three photos of the affected skin area, answer a few questions about the complaints and provide some personal details, whereby the data is processed and secured on servers in Germany in compliance with GDPR. Within 24 hours, you will then receive a diagnosis and, if necessary, a therapy recommendation and a prescription. In special cases, such as in the case of ambiguous images, the doctorderma medical team also makes personal contact. It routinely offers follow-up care as well.

The service is free for one week

There are over 2,000 diagnostic options for skin diseases. To make the work of doctors easier, doctorderma is currently developing an artificial intelligence that can assist with diagnosis. The startup also wants to make this service available in B2B business, for example to health insurance companies. Private ones already cover the 25-euro standard fee, but this is not yet the case with statutory health insurers. In the week from November 12 to 19, doctorderma is offering its service free of charge, by the way.
