More than 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by oceans, and their condition is critical. They are suffering from pollution, overfishing and the consequences of climate change. Can the situation be improved with the help of artificial intelligence (AI)? The AI for the Oceans Award, which AI.HAMBURG is presenting for the first time this year together with a number of partners, is looking for answers to this question. The application deadline is 1 July 2024.

How the AI for the Oceans Award works

Teams of all kinds are eligible to take part, including startups, NGOs and associations. The use of AI to solve a problem affecting the oceans is mandatory. An expert jury reviews all entries and provides well-founded feedback. Three finalists and teams from a longlist will be given the opportunity to present at SMM 2024. The world's leading trade fair for the maritime industry will take place in Hamburg from 3 to 6 September. An audience prize and a jury prize will be awarded at SMM. The latter is endowed with 10,000 euros and includes a campaign on LinkedIn sponsored by the German Ocean Foundation.

The three finalists will also be invited to present their concepts at the Ocean AI Summit in Lisbon at the end of September. Finally, the jury winner will be given a stage at the AI Summit, which is planned for December in Hamburg. The jury will take the following criteria into account when deciding which three teams reach the final:

  • How helpful the solution is in improving the state of the oceans.

  • Whether the project uses AI in an innovative way.

  • How likely it is that the solution is scalable and will be a success.
