The latest edition of the "Next Generation" report from the Startup Association and startupdetector on the German startup landscape shows a positive trend. According to the report, the number of new foundings increased by a total of 15% in the first half of 2024 compared to the second half of 2023. The figure for Hamburg is 10%.

These are the founding hotspots

The report analysed 1,384 foundings from the last six months on the basis of commercial register data. It was compiled by the German Startup Association in collaboration with the information service startupdetector. Berlin (plus 28%) and North Rhine-Westphalia (plus 25%) recorded the highest growth rates. Berlin is also ahead in terms of the absolute number of new foundings (265) and has the highest figure per 100,000 inhabitants (7.1) of all the federal states. Hamburg is in second place with a result of 4.1, with a total of 77 new startups. In the city ranking, which combines the second half of 2023 and the first half of 2024, Munich took the top spot. Hamburg reached position 8.

The key sector is software. Never before since the first Next Generation survey in 2019 have more startups been founded in this sector than in the past six months. There were 302, which represents an increase of 35%. This means that every fifth new startup is in this sector. Second place, with 126 foundings, goes to the "Medical" sector, which, like "Food", is stagnating. There was significant growth in "eCommerce" and "Media" (both up 36%) and "Mobility" (up 35%). The downward trend in "Energy" and "Environmental Technology", which are actually highly relevant topics, is somewhat surprising. This no longer applies to "Blockchain and Crypto", where the downward trend of recent years continues with only eight foundings.
