Hamburg Innovation connects business and science

Since its launch in 2004, Hamburg Innovation's mission has remained constant: to build bridges between science and business for the benefit of society. In November 2014, biologist and manager Martin Mahn took over as Managing Director. At the end of his term of office, he takes stock: “It has been a great pleasure for me to have been able to make such an important contribution to the innovative strength of the Hamburg region over the last ten years. I look back with pride on the development of Hamburg Innovation and the many successful projects that we have implemented together with our shareholders and partners during this time.”

He was succeeded by Johanna Große-Lohmann in January 2025. The political scientist previously worked at the management consultancy EY and the biotechnology company Eppendorf, among others. “As the new Managing Director of Hamburg Innovation GmbH, I am looking forward to building on previous successes and working with a talented, committed team to help shape the future of innovation in Hamburg and beyond in order to advance effective solutions for the challenges of tomorrow,” she comments on her new role. “With a clear focus on the strengths of PIER Plus, as well as the needs of science and business, we will continue to be a driver of growth and success in Hamburg in the future.” PIER Plus defines itself as the scientific platform of the Hamburg metropolitan region and is closely linked to Hamburg Innovation.

“Our science hub develops innovative ideas at a rapid pace. To ensure that none of these ideas are lost, there needs to be a strong exchange between science and industry. If the transfer of knowledge and technology is successful, we all win: science, business and our city. Hamburg Innovation GmbH has been paving the way here for 20 years. I would like to thank Martin Mahn for his commitment and look forward to working with Johanna Große-Lohmann for even more innovation made in Hamburg.”
