Hamburg and Israel launch innovation partnership

21 February 2023
Chamber of Commerce and Hamburg Invest sign co-operation agreement in Tel Aviv - closer ties between Israeli start-up scene and Hamburg's economy

Businesses in Hamburg and Israel's start-up scene are set to forge even closer ties. This comes after Hamburg’s Chamber of Commerce, Hamburg Invest and the German-Israeli Chamber of Commerce Abroad signed an agreement Monday (February 20, 2023) on closer co-operation with emphasis on tech scouting. The agreement, which was signed in Tel Aviv, gives Hamburg-based companies an overview of new technologies and digital solutions in Israel and should facilitate contacts to potential partner companies. The agreement is also likely to boost the settlement of Israeli start-ups and scale-ups in Hamburg. The fintech, cyber security, logistics, life science, maritime economy and renewable energies are particularly important sectors.

Tel Aviv and Hamburg banking on innovations

Philip Koch, Managing Director International at Hamburg's Chamber of Commerce, remarked: "Israel is an international centre of innovation and can offer important impetus for boosting the digital transformation of Hamburg's economy. In accordance with our location strategy 'Hamburg 2040,' we want the collaboration to give Hamburg a locational edge and to raise its international visibility," Koch added.

"Hamburg 2040"  focuses on increased international networking with centres of innovation including Israel, which is also hailed as a hub of start-ups.

Innovation partnership - part of "Hamburg 2040" strategy

Dr Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of Hamburg Invest, said: "Hamburg and Tel Aviv have many commonalities. In addition to their maritime character and high standard of living, both cities share an open and welcoming culture of innovation, the opportunity of which should be used for development and marketing." The collaboration offers talented professionals and the start-up scene in particular an excellent opportunity to network and use the many links between the two cities, he added. The partners had identified topics for an innovation partnership during a trip by a delegation in June 2022. The agreement has been signed for an initial, two-year period.
