Gin “Made in Hamburg” among world’s best – founders scoop "The Drinks Report" prize

The world's best flavoured gin hails from northern Hamburg’s smallest distillery, according to the London-based trade magazine "The Drinks Report, which presents the annual "World Gin Awards". The Hamburg-Zanzibar Tumeric No. 1 Gin "Made in Hamburg" is characterised by a "sophisticated nose offering spice and a bit of cucumber. There’s turmeric present on the palate, provides some balance in a savoury way; excellent with tonic. Lovely herbal and earthy notes, very well-balanced and super smooth."

Gin based on personal recipe

"We are absolutely thrilled by this surprise win," said Yuka Suzuki, who founded the start-up Hamburg-Zanzibar with her husband Hauke Günther. "In summer 2017, we experimented with remnants of turmeric from our last trip to Zanzibar in our kitchen. The result was our first self-distilled gin based on our own recipe." For two years, the yoga teacher and the biologist built up their business on the side, before Suzuki eventually became self-employed in 2020.  "We entered two bottles of our Tumeric gin in the 'World Gin Awards' in late 2020 as a joke. We never thought we had a chance of a win at the world's biggest spirits competition," she added. The couple has been running their distillery on the outskirts of Hamburg since 2020 and  distil gins and other specialities inspired by Zanzibar.

Gin World Awards presented in eleven categories

The "World Gin Awards" have been presented annually in London since 2014. The renowned trade magazine "The Drinks Report" selects the world’s best gins in eleven categories, including "best flavoured gin".
